Graphic design is the art of creating visuals to effectively communicate messages and encompasses various aspects, including branding, which involves developing visual identities for companies; print design, focusing on materials like brochures and posters; web design, crafting user-friendly websites; and advertising, creating graphics for promotional campaigns. Key principles include typography (choosing and arranging text), color (evoking emotions and creating harmony), layout (organizing elements for clarity), and imagery (using pictures or illustrations to enhance the message).

Processes

Creative Brief

This should be developed by the client and the designer together in an ideal setting. The brief is very important as it forms the definition of the project. A typical brief involves an overview of the project requirements along with its aims and objectives. There should be a list of who is involved (stakeholders) along with its aims and objectives. It should also contain the expected deliverables, including some scheduling information and any milestones.

It's important to know who the audiences are; this is crucial as designs are done for the audience. The more you understand your audience, the better. The message should clearly be indicated, defining the purpose of the project and including other pertinent information. The more details, the more successful the design. The budget might be included in the brief, which allows me to know what I'm working with to avoid surprises.

Research

I need to know the following about the clients: visual style, colors, typography, imagery, language style, tone, and mood. Once I have enough information about the project, it is important to turn it into visual resources. Creating a mind map is crucial for connecting associative information. Additionally, creating personas is important for identifying potential audiences for which the designs are intended. This helps me form an emotional connection with them.

Ideation

+
-

This is where the design starts to evolve. I begin by creating thumbnail sketches that have very little detail; they are meant to express what is going on in my head. After that, I create wireframe sketches to develop the ideas further. As I progress, I eliminate what doesn't work and enhance what does, running the refined concepts by the stakeholders to confirm that I'm heading in the right direction.

Production

+
-

This is the final stage where the artwork is produced. During this phase, I use computer software to create high-quality digital versions of the designs. This involves refining details, ensuring that all elements align with the established visual style, and preparing files for the intended output—whether for print, digital platforms, or other formats. Attention to detail is crucial, as this stage ensures that the final product meets both the client’s expectations and the project's objectives.
